HPE GreenLake delivers on-premises infrastructure as a service — a monthly, pay-per-use operating expense instead of a large upfront purchase, and a cloud experience for data that stays in your own facility.
| HPE GreenLake (as a service) | Traditional purchase (CapEx) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost model | Monthly operating expense (OpEx), pay-per-use | Upfront capital expense (CapEx) |
| Upfront capital | No large upfront outlay | Full capacity purchased up front |
| Ownership & lifecycle | HPE owns, manages, and maintains the system | You own and manage the lifecycle |
| Capacity for growth | Buffer capacity pre-installed; billed only when used (above a reserved minimum) | Provision and purchase ahead of demand |
| Billing basis | Metered per VM, per container, per GB (storage), per GiB (memory) | Not applicable — fixed asset |
| HPE GreenLake | Public cloud (AWS / Azure) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where workloads run | Your data center, edge, or colocation | The provider's remote data centers |
| Where data resides | On your own premises | In the provider's cloud regions |
| Operating model | Cloud experience — self-service, pay-per-use, fully managed by HPE | Cloud self-service, provider-managed |
| Software stack | Any stack you choose | Provider's stack (e.g., AWS Outposts is tied to AWS) |
| Public-cloud services | Complements and integrates with public cloud; not a public cloud itself | Native hyperscale services |
Comparison of delivery and commercial models. HPE GreenLake capabilities per HPE; general public-cloud characteristics for context.
HPE GreenLake is an as-a-service offering that brings the cloud operating model to your own environment. HPE installs a complete, preconfigured system — hardware and software — in your data center, at the edge, or in a colocation facility, retains ownership of the equipment, and manages and maintains it for its full lifecycle. Instead of buying the infrastructure outright, you pay a single monthly bill based on what you use.
You pay monthly for the infrastructure you actually use, metered automatically — for example per virtual machine, per container, per GB of storage, and per GiB of memory. Every GreenLake system also ships with extra buffer capacity so you can grow without waiting on new hardware, and you are not billed for that buffer until you use it. You do commit to a reserved minimum capacity that is billed each month regardless of usage, which is how HPE funds the pre-installed system.
HPE retains ownership of the servers and storage even though the equipment is installed and runs in your own data center, at the edge, or in a colocation facility. Because you do not buy the hardware outright, the spend is an operating expense rather than a capital purchase. In some financing structures, ownership can instead sit with HPE Financial Services.
You commit to a reserved minimum capacity — often called the reserve — that is billed each month regardless of how much you actually use; this committed baseline is how HPE funds the complete system it pre-installs for you. Usage above the reserve, drawn from the pre-installed buffer capacity, is metered and billed on top at pay-per-use rates. HPE and your partner help size the reserve to your baseline workload before you sign.
A traditional purchase is a capital expense: you pay for all the capacity up front, own the equipment, and manage its lifecycle yourself. HPE GreenLake delivers the same on-premises infrastructure as a service — there is no large upfront capital outlay, costs move to a monthly operating expense, and HPE owns and manages the hardware for you.
Public cloud runs your workloads in a hyperscaler's remote data centers. HPE GreenLake brings the cloud experience — self-service, pay-per-use, and fully managed — to infrastructure that sits in your own data center, edge, or colocation, so your data stays on your premises. Unlike AWS Outposts, which is tied to the AWS stack, GreenLake supports the software stack you choose. GreenLake is not itself a public cloud; it complements and can integrate with public cloud.
Yes. HPE positions its Morpheus software, including Morpheus VM Essentials, as an alternative to VMware that can manage both HPE's KVM-based HVM hypervisor and your existing VMware ESXi virtual machines from a single interface. VM Essentials is licensed per socket rather than per core. HPE offers this in response to rising virtualization licensing costs and single-vendor lock-in.
HPE GreenLake includes the Consumption Analytics Portal, which shows your monthly charges against your requested, installed, and committed capacity, forecasts future usage to help you avoid shortages, and surfaces optimization insights.
HPE GreenLake is delivered through authorized HPE partners. EdgeCloudStore.com is a division of BlueAlly, an authorized HPE GreenLake reseller. HPE GreenLake Central is the centralized, online self-service console for your GreenLake environment. From a single portal you provision, manage, and monitor virtual machines across your data centers and clouds, and track cost, capacity, consumption, compliance, and performance — including CPU, storage, and memory utilization. HPE has been folding it into the broader HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform console.
HPE manages the infrastructure for you. Under the GreenLake managed model HPE installs the system and handles the full hardware lifecycle — maintenance, firmware and patching, capacity, and continuous monitoring — while you keep control of your virtual machines, operating systems, applications, and data, including your own security patches and backups. The exact division of responsibility can vary by GreenLake service.
Yes. HPE GreenLake offers a free Morpheus plugin for ServiceNow, installable from the ServiceNow Store, that exposes GreenLake private-cloud resources as catalog items your users can order and manage directly in ServiceNow. GreenLake also provides public APIs and an official HPE Terraform provider, so you can automate provisioning as infrastructure-as-code and integrate with your existing ITSM and DevOps toolchains.
Because HPE GreenLake runs in your own data center, at the edge, or in a colocation facility rather than a shared public cloud, your data and workloads physically stay on your premises and under your control — which directly supports data-residency and sovereignty requirements. For specific regulatory frameworks such as GDPR, HIPAA, or SOC 2, we work with you and HPE to map the solution's controls to your compliance obligations.
